How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Dutch Oven Cookbooks starts with one question: will this pot work for the person who is shopping for it? For Dutch ovens, that means what you cook, how many you cook for and whether the pot stays in the kitchen or goes to a campsite.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with how you cook

A pot for weekly soup and a pot for a campfire loaf are not the same buy.

A big cast iron pot that suits one cook can be too heavy to lift for another.

We check the size in quarts, the weight, the handles and the lid, and we say what to look for when your stove, oven or campsite limits the choice.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at quart size, shape, bare or enameled cast iron, pre-seasoning, weight, handle type, lid fit, oven-safe limits and whether a model has legs or a flanged lid for coals.

Lodge, Le Creuset, Camp Chef, Tramontina and the other makers describe their pots in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the care guidance and the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a pot. We look for patterns, like enamel that chips, lids that rattle, rust spots on bare iron and handles that get too hot.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A pot that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Many models come in look-alike sizes and colors with similar names, so we check each model and size, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Oven-safe numbers and lid-knob limits come from the maker, and we quote them as the maker's numbers. We don't make health or food-safety promises about any material.

Dutch ovens and the coals used with camp ovens get very hot. Follow the maker's manual, use proper mitts and take care around open fires.
